Career Development and Translational Research in Pediatrics
Description
Career Development and Translational Research in Pediatrics builds upon the
strengths of the Department of Pediatrics to expand the translational research
paradigm to include investigation for child health problems. This program serves
as a catalyst for building research teams that include a continuum of
researchers consisting of basic science, translational, and clinical
investigators within and across multiple departments and schools.
The objectives of this program include:
- Increasing the number of pediatric fellows and junior faculty who complete
formal coursework in clinical investigation
- Increasing the number of investigators with a focus on child-health who
participate in the K12 roadmap program or K23 program
- Creating a Community Scientist Training and Research (C-STAR) for pediatric
residents.
- Encouraging partnerships that promote community-based research between
pediatric advocacy organizations and pediatric investigators by expanding the
existing relationships between the Department of Pediatrics and other pediatric
investigators working within community organizations.
To accomplish these objectives, this program will:
- Identify and select Scholars focused on Child Health Issues that will be awarded
the K12 or K23
- Develop a formal curriculum for Pediatric Residents to participate in Community
Scientist Training and Research (C-STAR) for pediatric residents and identify
potential mentors within the School of Medicine, Nursing and Social Work
- Recruit Residents interested in the C-STAR Program
- Implement Child Discovery Institute Research initiatives
- Identify and expand list of advocacy programs focused on child health issues
