Human Imaging Unit
Description
The Human Imaging Unit (HIU) of the ICTS resides in the Center for Clinical Imaging Research (CCIR), a state-of-the-art biomedical imaging facility located on the 10th floor of the West Pavilion of Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO. The CCIR provides the latest in advanced imaging technology, equipment and expertise to support basic and translational inpatient and outpatient clinical research.
Services Available to ICTS Members
HIU provides a full range of biomedical imaging services using the CCIR facilities.
These services include:
- Pre-study services that help investigators design, set up, and kick off the study
- Coordinating services, including Scanning, that provide assistance in executing, monitoring and evaluating the study
- Information Technology management services to handle, track, and process imaging data
CCIR Facilities
- Subject waiting area
- Two consultation rooms
- Nurses’ workstation
- Locked supply storage area
- Temporary storage area
- Numerous temporary work spaces
- -70° C freezer (temporary storage)
- Specimen refrigerator (temporary storage)
- Refrigerator
- Lab resources
- Wireless hook-up for laptops

Personnel Support
The HIU has access to three main personnel groups working in the CCIR.
These groups work together to provide services, support, maintenance, and development needs for the Center. In addition, the CCIR has established a formal master research agreement with Siemens Medical which provides full-time, on-site personnel that work with WUSM to promote the development of new biomedical imaging technologies.
Equipment
The HIU has access to six state-of-the-art imaging scanners used to conduct research in computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), combined PET/CT, and ultrasound (US). Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging cameras also can be accessed from the Center.
